Ocean Ironman Legend

After dominating the ocean sports world for close to eight years, Hummer decided to go out on top- giving up competition in 1996 after winning his fourth consecutive King’s Race title in Honolulu, HI.  He has since gone on to become one of the most versatile talents in sports broadcasting. On a whim, he returned to the surf in 1999, picking up where he left off by winning the National Ironman and overall titles.

Born in landlocked Akron, Ohio, Hummer began swimming at the age of 5, when he won his first age group medal. He was a three-time High School All-American. He earned an academic scholarship to Kenyon College, where he won 17 All-American titles.

Upon graduation, the beaches of Southern California lured Craig westward. “I knew I would eventually live somewhere near the ocean,” confesses Hummer. After rising through the ranks as a Los Angeles County Lifeguard, he quickly began his winning ways. Besides capturing six straight National Lifeguard Championships, Hummer was the overall champion in the Bud Light Ocean Series from 1990-1996. He is the only American ever contracted to compete in Australia’s professional lifesaving championships, ‘The Uncle Toby’s Super Series,” where the purse exceeded one million dollars.

Craig’s dedication extends beyond the realm of competition, using his athleticism to help spread the word on water safety around the country. From 1993-1995, during his “off” months, he ran lifesaving clinics to promote water safety where kids ages 7 to 17 were trained on all aspects of ocean swimming, safety, and watercraft skills. He has been a Master’s swim coach since 1987 and from 1999-2002 conducted clinics designed to teach all ages the skills and conditioning specific to open water swimming.

With his California good looks, it’s no wonder he has graced the covers of many leading fitness magazines. He was named one of People Magazines “50 Most Beautiful People” in the spring of ’97, and has also been profiled by many of the leading entertainment magazine shows such as: “Entertainment Tonight”, “Extra”, “American Journal”, “Day and Date”, and “Hard Copy.” He had a recurring role on “Baywatch” playing himself. He has served as a spokesperson for Bullfrog Sunscreen, PowerBar, Sportmart, and Sunglass Hut, as well as appeared in national commercials for McDonald’s, Foster’s, Bud Light, Miller Genuine Draft, Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper, Ford, and Gillette to name a few.
